Here is an article that you should read before creating a twitter trend and tweeting about your trend.
First a trend is called something that has a HASHTAG ( # ). When you say to your followers to tweet let’s say #iStrategy you have to know that people will be tweeting what they wish with the trend that you have provided them. In our case it’s iStrategy.
A mention as you all know i guess, it’s when you MENTION somebody on twitter. When users are asked to tweet about a specific trend they are not going to write your trend + mention you. Some of the users do, but it’s better to not because they will not have space for your replay or RT.
Here is another example
#askrichard, you can view below that 95% of users have the trend that is required and their question. From 100 tweets we can see that there are 5 tweets that contain @richardbranson.
If your web team is running a trend, they should know web tools to use and run a successful campaign. You can use TweetDeck to make different blocks of trends as well.
You know why everybody create Trends and not Mentions? Because different profiles have different settings, some users might have their profile closed (not public ) and it opens your doors on twitter by connecting to users who you are not following.
