How to become an expert on Social Media?

I was reading my Twitter timeline last night and a tweet with this video caught my attention:

As you probably know, I am not a fan of negativity, but  looking at this tweet and the video posted of course, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I guess it’s because I have never googled this type of questions or I haven’t seen this kind of content on my timeline before. Not until yesterday of course!

Firstly, I would like to explain my own perception regarding this way of making money. It is absurd when a company approaches potential clients by telling them that they can manage their social media accounts without  knowing how their business works, how their brand operates, what are their beliefs or why are they a better company than any other organisation out there. I mean let’s get serious now.

I consider myself  a student and I will always be one, no matter if my work experience in this industry consists of 6 years of hard work and being  in the business area for more than 10 years. The reason behind my constant learning is that this industry is fairly new,  I learn so many things on a daily basis and  I study user behaviour by new case studies on advertising campaigns. Every two days there is always a new update. For instance, individuals like Brian Solis who is considered as one of the most respected people in the digital world says that there are no gurus in this field.

In addition, let me elaborate on my argument by anylizing this video.

Have a good look at this YouTube Channel:

Can you see the design of this channel? GetProSocial? I mean, really? There is not even ONE PROFILE PICTURE, which is a basic element for a channel as such. Then where is the timeline design image? Where is the text in the ‘about’ section? And these are the basics which someone learns when they start creating an account on YouTube.

In order for you to get a better visual idea, here is a screen shot of vivid network YouTube account:

Do you get my point? It is extremely important to include a unique and attractive design on your profile, you need to maintain your own logos and links to other social media channels as well. And I repeat, these are the basics.

I will not mention in detail how design is vital for any channel as we are just talking about some basic elements.

When approaching the business aspect of this video, does it create the impression that anyone can create a Facebook account or Twitter account and start selling a product? It is vital to take into consideration advanced analytics, engagement, targeted advertising, contextual advertising and so many other aspects to study. What about top Facebook fan page in the United Kingdom? Who did it change since last year?? How about how much a Facebook fan is worth, like the Bulmers example?

There are endless questions that I can ask about this topic, but my advice to you is to be very careful when choosing who to work with, starting from the people that will work on the design issues all the way to the execution team at the very end. The ReTweet that I saw was posted by @MariosK ( I don’t want to reveal who he is ) who constantly tweets about social media updates. Personally, I thought that he had a very good perspective on how the digital world works, because of the engagement I had by following the links that where ReTweeted by him. As a result the links took me to Mashable and SocialExaminer, which are reliable websites when reading other peoples opinions. Unfortunately, some people just tweet and post on Facebook whatever they see and sometimes you are fooled by believing that they are actually well informed and have their personal opinion.

These kind of people are destroying other individuals potential reputation. It’s like the cliche saying about men, ‘all men are the same’.  Ofcourse this does not stand. There are a few men who don’t treat ladies like a gentlemen so women come to the conclusion that all men behave the same. The same philosophy goes into this category. There are a lot of people that really care about results, how a web  and social design looks and take a lot of time and effort to educate themselves so they can deliver fantastic results.

Before jumping to easy conclusions and closing an agreement with somebody, conduct your own research, with real testimonials, awards, portfolio, blog posts, quality of design and other details.

Lastly, ask yourself about  how current  influencers on digital media become so successful? Take Brian Solis, Mari Smith, Gary Vaynerchuk, Simon Sinek and others in the business / digital industry? So you don’t go deep and start searching for their online presence, trust me, they are quite good!
